Shoes – A fashion symbol today
Designed to protect the foot, shoe is footwear that was primarily designed with the idea of protecting our feet from the terrain we walk on or the climate. But, over the years, the shoe has evolved as an item of fashion. The earliest known shoes were used about 5000 years back and were made of leather. There was nothing like men’s shoes or women’s shoes – it was all the same. With the passage of time, the design of shoes evolved and around the Middle Ages, shoes were considered fashionable and were even considered as status symbols. Till the beginning of the 19th century, shoes were made common for both the feet without any differentiation between the left and the right. But after that, shoes separately for each foot and there was a clear demarcation between men’s shoes and women’s shoes. With advances in technology and discovery of new materials, shoes for both men and women have been designed with materials like rubber, synthetic cloth and plastics.
Men’s shoes are most classified on the way the shoes are covered and the most common ones are the ones that use a lace and the ones that come without any fasteners. Men’s shoes are also classified on the way they are decorated. When it comes to women’s shoes, the categorizing factor is the heels. There are high heeled and kitten heeled women’s shoes with a number of designs and styles. Women’s shoes are the nowadays considered to be more of a fashion symbol as there are even diamond studded women shoes in the market!! There are unisex shoes that can be worn both by men and women and shoes for specific purposes like athletics and dancing.
